Generator project in Rochester Hills

Another interlock and inlet install, this time on a Siemens panel in Rochester Hills. Like Eaton's Cutler-Hammer line, Siemens makes a listed interlock kit designed specifically for their panels, so the installation is clean and doesn't involve drilling or modifying a panel that isn't rated for it — a shortcut some unlicensed installers take that voids the panel's listing and creates a real safety issue.

We installed the interlock kit on the panel itself and added a power inlet on the exterior of the home, giving the homeowner a permanent, weatherproof plug for a portable generator. During an outage, the interlock lets them safely isolate the house from the utility grid before switching over to generator power — no extension cords through a cracked window, no risk of backfeeding the line.

Late July is a common time for this kind of call in Metro Detroit. Summer storms bring downed lines and outages that can last anywhere from a few hours to several days, and homeowners who've been through one outage without backup power tend to not want to go through a second one unprepared. An interlock and inlet setup like this one is usually a one-day job and a fraction of the cost of a whole-home standby generator with automatic transfer switch.
