THE CONNECTION MATTERS AS MUCH AS THE CHARGER

Why Hardwired Beats
Cheap Plug-In Receptacles.

A car can draw its charging current for hours. We design for that continuous load, not just for an outlet that fits the plug.

01 / THERMAL SAFETY

Remove a high-current
plug connection.

Loose contacts and incorrectly torqued terminals generate heat during sustained charging. Hardwiring removes the receptacle-to-plug interface. A low-price range outlet is not our default for an EV that may charge for 8–10 hours.

If a plug-in installation is appropriate, our specification is an industrial-grade Hubbell or Bryant receptacle, a correctly sized enclosure, and manufacturer-specified terminal torque.

OUR STANDARD Hardwire first. Industrial grade if plugged.
02 / GFCI COORDINATION

One coordinated
protection strategy.

Garage receptacles require GFCI protection under applicable code. EV chargers also have internal ground-fault protection. Some combinations can cause nuisance tripping; ChargePoint specifically recommends hardwiring where a GFCI breaker is required for plug-in use.

We select the connection and circuit protection for the actual charger, its listing, and the local inspector’s requirements. Required protection is never bypassed.

03 / CHARGING SPEED

48A charging.
A circuit built for it.

A compatible hardwired charger on a 60A circuit can deliver 48A continuously: 11.5 kW at 240V. A 50A receptacle circuit supports up to 40A continuous charging: 9.6 kW.

Roughly 35–41 miles of range per hour on a typical EV, using 25–30 kWh per 100 miles at 90% charging efficiency. Your onboard charger, battery temperature, and vehicle efficiency set the actual result.

03 / CAPACITY MANAGEMENT

Smart Energy
Managed Install

For tight or full panels where a listed load manager can avoid a service upgrade.

$2,600–$3,400
Installed circuit + load-management scope
  • Listed load management: a DCC unit that monitors whole-home demand, or a SimpleSwitch that shares an existing circuit like the dryer, matched to your service and charger.
  • Automatic EV pause/resume when the monitored load requires it
  • Device model matched to service, panel, and charger
  • Load-manager setup and operational testing

Typical ranges supplied by The Neighborhood Electrician. Charger hardware is quoted separately unless expressly included in your written proposal. Permit fees, concealed access, extra distance, restoration, and service repairs are itemized before approval. A load manager may avoid a service replacement; it cannot correct damaged equipment or an unsuitable installation.

DTE REBATES & OVERNIGHT SAVINGS

Charge while you sleep.
Choose the rate that fits.

DTE’s D1.2 Time of Day and D1.13 Overnight Savers plans offer different charging windows. D1.13’s lowest-price window is 1 a.m.–7 a.m., every day; D1.2’s off-peak period is outside its weekday 11 a.m.–7 p.m. peak window.

We provide permit pulling, city inspection coordination, and itemized rebate-ready documentation. We also help set your charger’s schedule to your selected DTE plan.

The current Home EV Charger Rebate has income and equipment eligibility requirements. We prepare your installation paperwork; DTE determines approval.

THE CLEAN GARAGE GUARANTEE

The charger belongs in your garage.
The mess doesn’t.

You should see a deliberate installation, not loose wiring, crooked pipe, and drywall dust.

Laser-level conduit runs

Pipe follows a planned route, with aligned bends and secure straps. No sagging runs across your ceiling.

Zero exposed loose wiring

Circuit conductors stay protected in the specified wiring system. Charger cables are neatly docked.

Clean drywall penetrations

Neat openings, protected edges, and appropriate sealing. Any required access or restoration is discussed before work.

HEPA vacuum cleanup

Dust control while drilling, followed by cleanup of drywall dust, metal shavings, and packaging.

A fully labeled EV circuit

Your breaker and directory identify the EV charger. We leave you with clear circuit and operating information.

A real charging walkthrough

We verify charger setup and protection, test operation, and walk through charging schedules and load management.

BEFORE WE PULL THE FIRST WIRE

Straight answers.
Before installation day.

Do you provide the charger, or do I buy it?

You can supply a Tesla Universal Wall Connector, ChargePoint Home Flex, Emporia, or another listed Level 2 charger, or ask us to quote the charger with your installation. We confirm the connector, output, and manufacturer’s installation requirements for your vehicle before work.

Is an electrical permit required?

A new dedicated EV circuit requires the applicable electrical permit and inspection. We handle permit pulling and city inspection coordination. The inspector verifies the installation under the locally adopted Michigan requirements.

What if my panel has no open slots?

Open breaker spaces and electrical capacity are different questions. Depending on the panel’s listing and available capacity, a permitted solution may involve approved tandem breakers, a subpanel, or listed load management. A photo check starts the review; we verify the actual equipment before choosing a solution.

Will a 100A service always need an upgrade?

No. Household demand, charger amperage, and suitable load management determine the options. A 24A or 32A setting may meet your daily driving needs; a listed load manager can pause charging during high household demand. Our photo tool estimates the headroom so our consultation starts with your panel.

Can a photo calculation approve my installation?

No. Photos cannot establish every appliance’s nameplate rating, conductor capacity, hidden equipment, or the full downstream load on a subpanel. This photo check is a preliminary NEC demand screening. We confirm the complete load calculation and equipment on site before final design and installation.

How much faster is Level 2 than a wall outlet?

Level 2 uses a dedicated 240V circuit rather than ordinary 120V charging. The options here deliver 5.8–11.5 kW at 24–48A. Actual miles added per hour depend on your vehicle’s onboard charger and efficiency; a larger circuit won’t make a vehicle charge beyond its own limit.
