Code Correction project in Walled Lake

This Walled Lake home needed a complete outside service upgrade to bring the electrical service up to current code: a new 100 amp service, a weatherproof disconnect, a new grounding system, and whole-home surge suppression.

The weatherproof disconnect is worth calling out specifically. Code requires an outdoor, weather-rated disconnect that lets the homeowner, first responders, or a utility worker cut power to the home from outside without having to go inside during an emergency, flooding, or fire. Older homes frequently don't have one at all, or have a disconnect that isn't rated for outdoor exposure and has degraded over the years from weather.

The grounding system got rebuilt as part of the same job. Proper grounding gives fault current, from a short circuit or an equipment failure, a safe path to travel instead of through a person or into the structure of the house. A grounding system that's undersized, corroded, or improperly connected is one of the more common issues found on older homes during an inspection, and it's not something that shows symptoms until something actually goes wrong.

The whole-home surge suppressor rounds out the upgrade, protecting the new service and everything wired behind it from voltage spikes coming through the grid or from a nearby lightning strike.

Together, these changes bring the home's outside service up to the standard inspectors and insurers expect today, not the standard it was originally built to decades ago.
