EV Charger project in Oxford
This Oxford EV charger install centered on doing the fundamentals right: a 60 amp rated circuit run in all copper, terminated at a GFCI-rated disconnect, with every lug torqued to the manufacturer's spec.
That last detail matters more than it sounds like it should. Every breaker, disconnect, and lug connection has a torque specification, published by the manufacturer, for how tight the connection needs to be. Too loose, and the connection develops resistance over time as the wire works itself slightly loose from vibration and thermal cycling. That resistance generates heat, and heat at a loose connection is one of the more common causes of electrical fires that trace back to work that looked fine on the day it was installed. Too tight, and the wire strands can be damaged, which causes the same problem from the other direction. Torquing every connection to spec, and checking it, is the difference between a circuit that's still solid in ten years and one that starts causing problems in two.
The GFCI-rated disconnect adds a layer of shock protection specific to this circuit, cutting power if it detects current leaking to ground, on top of the standard overcurrent protection a regular disconnect provides. Combined with a 60 amp all-copper run sized for the charger's full draw, this circuit has the capacity and the protection to run a Level 2 charger reliably for years without being the weak link in the system.
