Panel Upgrade project in Clarkston
This Clarkston home needed a full service change — not just a panel swap, but a complete upgrade of the incoming electrical service to 150 amps. That included running a new through-roof riser, the conduit that carries the service conductors from the weatherhead down to the meter, replaced and sized correctly for the new service.
With the new 150 amp panel in place, we installed a generator interlock kit — a mechanical safety device that prevents the panel from being fed by both the utility and a backup generator at the same time. It's the code-compliant alternative to a transfer switch for homeowners who run a portable generator during outages, and it's a lot more affordable while still keeping the home's wiring, and the utility line workers restoring power, safe.
We also added whole-home surge suppression to protect the new panel and everything connected to it, and an outside disconnect so the homeowner or first responders can cut power at the meter without going inside the house.
One more thing we built in: headroom. We sized the new service and panel with enough spare capacity to add an EV charger down the road without needing another service upgrade. A lot of older 100 amp services simply don't have the room for a Level 2 charger alongside everything else running in the house — this one does.
Between the generator-ready interlock, the surge protection, and the EV headroom, this panel is set up to handle whatever this home needs for the next 20-plus years, not just what it needs today.
