Code Correction project in Shelby Township

This Shelby Township home had outdated fluorescent fixtures that we replaced with energy-efficient LED fixtures throughout.

Fluorescent fixtures were the standard for decades, but they've aged out for a few reasons beyond just efficiency. The ballasts that power fluorescent tubes fail over time, and replacement ballasts and bulbs for older fixture types are getting harder to find and more expensive as manufacturers phase them out in favor of LED. Fluorescent tubes also contain mercury, so old ones need to be disposed of properly rather than thrown in the trash, which is one more headache a fixture swap removes entirely.

LED fixtures solve the efficiency problem directly. They use a fraction of the electricity a comparable fluorescent fixture draws for the same light output, run cooler, and last significantly longer before needing replacement, often rated for tens of thousands of hours versus a few thousand for a fluorescent tube. For this homeowner, that means a lower electric bill every month going forward, not a one-time saving.

There's also a quality-of-light difference most homeowners notice right away. Fluorescent fixtures are known for a flicker and a harsh, sometimes buzzy light that LED doesn't have, along with better dimming compatibility if dimmable LED fixtures are used.

It's a straightforward upgrade with an immediate payoff: lower energy use, more reliable light, and one less type of bulb to keep in stock.
