Panel Upgrade project in Berkley

This Berkley home came with a meter can mounted at the wrong height — outside the range utility companies and inspectors require for accessibility and safe reading. Correcting that meant repositioning the meter can as part of a larger service upgrade, rather than a quick standalone fix.

We performed a complete 150 amp service change: new through-roof riser, new meter can set at the correct height, and a new 150 amp panel. Once the panel was in, we installed a generator interlock kit, the mechanical safety device that lets a homeowner safely power the house from a portable generator during an outage without the risk of backfeeding the utility line.

We also added whole-home surge suppression ahead of the panel and an outside disconnect at the meter, so power can be cut without stepping inside the house — useful for storm damage, flooding, or emergency service work.

As with our other service upgrades, we sized this one with room to grow: the new panel and service have enough spare capacity for an EV charger to be added later without another service upgrade.

A meter height issue like this one usually gets caught during a home sale, an insurance inspection, or a utility company audit — and by the time it's flagged, it often means redoing more than just the meter can. Handling it as part of a full service change, rather than a patch, is what keeps a home compliant and avoids a second disruption to the same wall.
