Frequently Asked Questions
Booking & prices
Straight answers about your next electrical project.
What does it cost to have an electrician come out?
Repair visits have a $99 dispatch fee, and it's waived if you move forward with the repair. Project estimates for panel upgrades, EV chargers, standby generators, hot tubs and remodels are free. You get an exact price before any work starts.
Can you give me a price over the phone?
Here are typical ranges: panel replacement $3,500–6,500, EV charger installation $1,300–2,100, generator interlock $1,100–1,700, and whole-house surge protection $650–1,300. Smaller repairs are priced on site, flat and upfront, because the cause decides the fix.
Can you come today?
We book the earliest open slot and keep a rapid-repair list for cancellations. For true emergencies (a burning smell, sparks, no power, or water in the panel) we offer an emergency visit for $329.
Do you work evenings or weekends?
Regular appointments are on weekdays. Evenings and weekends are reserved for emergencies, at $329.
Which jobs get a free estimate?
Panel upgrades, EV chargers, standby generators, hot tubs and remodels. Repair and troubleshooting visits use the $99 dispatch fee, which is waived if you move forward.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. Financing options are reviewed on site with your price. We also take cash, check and major credit cards.
Do you offer a senior or veteran discount?
Yes. Seniors and veterans get 10% off. Just mention it when you book.
I'm a landlord. Can my tenant meet the electrician?
Yes. Give us the tenant's name and the best arrival window, and we'll call before we arrive.
About our company
Straight answers about your next electrical project.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes, fully licensed and insured. The Neighborhood Electrician has been owned and run by a Michigan Master Electrician since 1997. Our electricians are background-checked, and we never subcontract.
Do you do commercial electrical work?
Yes. We handle store and office lighting, parking-lot poles, tenant build-outs, signs and new circuits.
Do you fix appliances or portable generators, or sell parts?
No. We work on home and business electrical systems: wiring, panels, circuits, lighting, EV chargers and permanently installed standby generators. We don't repair appliances or portable generators, and we don't sell parts.
Electrical safety
Straight answers about your next electrical project.
I smell burning or see sparks from an outlet or panel. What should I do?
If there is smoke or fire, call 911. Otherwise switch off that breaker or the main, don't use the outlet, and call a licensed electrician the same day.
Part of my house lost power or a breaker keeps tripping. What should I do?
First check whether your neighbors are out too; if so, call DTE. If only part of your home is out, it's usually a tripped breaker, a GFCI outlet upstream, or a loose connection. Reset the breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off and book a diagnosis.
Water got into my electrical panel. What should I do?
Don't touch the panel. Shut off the main only if you can do it standing on a dry surface. Have an electrician inspect it before the power goes back on.
DTE says the outage is fixed, but my power is still out. Why?
The problem may be on your side of the meter: the service cable, meter base or main breaker. That's work for an electrician, not the utility.
Panels & inspections
Straight answers about your next electrical project.
My insurance company says I need breakers instead of fuses. Can you do that?
Yes. Replacing fuse boxes and old auxiliary panels is one of our most common jobs, and the estimate is free.
Do I need a 100 amp or 200 amp panel?
It depends on what you run and plan to add, such as an EV charger, heat pump, hot tub or addition. We do a load calculation to size it correctly.
My home inspection flagged electrical problems. Can you fix them before closing?
Yes. We repair inspection items such as ungrounded outlets and unpermitted panel work, and we pull permits. Tell us your closing date when you book.
How much does an EV charger installation cost?
Typically $1,300–2,100. The price depends on the distance from your panel, your panel's capacity, and whether the charger goes indoors or outdoors.
Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?
Often not. A load calculation tells us whether your current panel can handle it.
Should I get a generator interlock or a transfer switch?
An interlock ($1,100–1,700 typical) lets you safely power your home from a portable generator. A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch turns on by itself when the power goes out.
Do you service Generac standby generators?
Yes. We install, repair and maintain Generac standby generators.
I'm pouring a concrete patio for a hot tub. Should the electrician come first?
Yes. Book us before the pour so the conduit goes under the slab. It costs far less than cutting concrete later.
Can you add power for a Ring doorbell or security camera?
Yes. We add the outlet, transformer or circuit it needs.
